HSK Level 3 to Level 4 — Why does the difficulty suddenly feel so much higher?

Many students say: “Teacher, I was doing fine with HSK Level 3, but why does Level 4 suddenly feel so difficult?”

That’s because the transition from Level 3 to Level 4 is a step from late beginner to intermediate level.

HSK Level 3 → Level 4 changes:

• Vocabulary: 600 → 1200 (doubled)

• Sentence length: 10 characters → 20–30 characters

• Reading texts: from “Xiao Wang goes to the supermarket” to “It rained yesterday, so Xiao Wang did not go to the supermarket”

What should you do?

Don’t panic. It is important to slow down. We recommend taking twice as much time to prepare for the transition from Level 3 to Level 4.

Specific strategies:

• Don’t start with practice tests immediately; first practice by skill: reading, listening, and writing separately

• For reading passages, first look at the questions, then search for answers in the text (don’t read from beginning to end)

• For listening mistakes, listen at least three times: first for checking answers, second for keywords, third for shadowing (reading aloud)

• Group vocabulary by category (e.g., weather, transportation, shopping) and organize commonly used grammar points
